The honest answer is that it depends on scope and on how quickly content and feedback come back from you. Here are realistic ranges based on the projects we actually deliver.
Typical timelines
- A small brochure site of five to eight pages on an established design approach: a few weeks.
- A standard corporate site with custom design, ten to twenty pages, contact and enquiry forms: around one to two months.
- An e-commerce site with product catalogue, payment gateway and delivery configuration: two to three months depending on catalogue size and integrations.
- A custom web application with user accounts, workflows and reporting: several months, scoped in phases.
Where the time actually goes
Design and development are the predictable parts. The variable parts are:
- Content. Waiting for copy, photos, product data and logos is the single largest cause of overrun on the projects we run. A site cannot be finished with placeholder text.
- Feedback cycles. Each round of review adds time. Consolidated feedback from one decision maker moves fast. Contradictory feedback from six people does not.
- Third parties. Payment gateway approvals, .com.my domain verification through MYNIC, and API access from other vendors run on their schedule, not ours.
How to make it faster
- Have your content ready, or commission copywriting at the start rather than at the end.
- Nominate one person to consolidate feedback and give a single response.
- Start gateway and domain applications early, in parallel with design.
- Agree scope up front and hold additions for a phase two.
