Domains under .my are administered by MYNIC, and unlike a .com they are restricted registrations. You must prove eligibility before the domain is issued. This trips up a lot of first time registrants, so here is what to expect.
Choosing the right extension
- .com.my for registered Malaysian businesses. The most common choice for companies.
- .my for individuals and organisations with a Malaysian presence.
- .org.my for registered non profit organisations and societies.
- .net.my for licensed network service providers.
- .edu.my and .gov.my for approved education and government bodies.
- .com and other generic extensions have no documentation requirement at all.
What documentation is needed
For a .com.my you will normally be asked for your SSM registration document, such as the company profile or business registration certificate, showing the entity name. The domain name you apply for should relate to the registered name or a brand you can show you have rights to. A trademark certificate helps if the domain is a brand rather than the company name. For an individual .my registration, a copy of the applicant identification is usually required.
How long it takes
A .com generic domain is live within minutes. A .my domain goes through manual verification, so allow a few working days and longer if documents are queried. Applications are rejected if the name does not match the entity, if the document is expired, or if the scan is unreadable. Send clear full page scans, not phone photos of a corner of a page.
Registrant details
Register the domain in your company name with your company as the legal registrant. That is the record that matters if you ever move providers. We are happy to manage the domain technically while you remain the owner.
Send your documents through your email thread with us or to [email protected] and we will handle the application.
