The padlock in the browser address bar tells your visitor that the connection to your site is encrypted. Without it, browsers actively warn people away, and most of them leave.
What SSL actually protects
It encrypts data in transit between the visitor's browser and your server. Anything typed into a form, including contact details, login credentials and payment information, is unreadable to anyone intercepting the connection. On public WiFi, which is where a lot of browsing happens, this is not theoretical.
What it does not protect
A padlock says nothing about whether the site is honest, well maintained or free of malware. Phishing sites use valid certificates too. Encryption in transit is one control among several, not a security certification.
Why it matters commercially
- Browsers label sites without it as Not Secure, in the address bar, where everyone can see it.
- Forms and payment pages without encryption trigger stronger warnings that block completion.
- Search engines treat secure connections as a positive ranking signal.
- Any payment gateway will require it before it will process transactions for you.
Zylax hosting includes it
Managed hosting includes a certificate, installed and renewing automatically, with traffic redirected from http to https so visitors always land on the secure version.
When the padlock disappears
Two common causes. First, the certificate failed to renew, usually because the domain expired or DNS was changed. Second, mixed content: the page is loading an image, script or stylesheet over plain http, so the browser downgrades the indicator even though the certificate is valid. Mixed content is fixed in the site content, not on the server.
Checking it
Click the padlock, view the certificate, and confirm the issued to name matches your domain and the expiry date is in the future. A name mismatch warning usually means you are on a subdomain that the certificate does not cover.
If you see a warning on your site, report it as a ticket. Reply to your email thread or contact [email protected].
